At least 10 foreign delegates and Central government representatives are expected at Tripura's Mayer Gomon, the Durga Puja carnival, in Agartala on October 23, as the state tries to promote it nationally and internationally, India Today NE reported on Tuesday, October 20.
Preparations reviewed
Kiran Gitte, Secretary to the Chief Minister and Secretary of the Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) Department, reviewed preparations on Tuesday with Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, Cultural Advisory Committee Vice-Chairperson Subrata Chakraborty, the ICA Director and officials from the PWD, police and fire services.
The main venue is in front of Maharani Tulsibati School. Officials reviewed the stage, security, traffic management and other logistics.
Crowd management
Special attention is being paid to the route between the main venue and Dashami Ghat, where idols are immersed. Arrangements include:
- strategic barricading and watchtowers
- police deployment
- health teams
- drinking water points
Officials are also coordinating with participating clubs and puja committees.
A growing event
Gitte said Mayer Gomon draws more attention every year, with more puja committees taking part and bigger crowds. The government wants to run it in a disciplined, coordinated way and gradually develop it into a major national cultural attraction, he said.
He described the carnival as a reflection of Tripura's distinct identity and traditions, and said showcasing it more widely could attract visitors and boost tourism.
Reaching out to embassies
The state approached several embassies and consulates to introduce them to the event, and a number of representatives showed interest, Gitte said. The Durga Puja holidays had made communication with some of them harder because offices were closed, but he hoped at least 10 foreign delegates would attend.
He cited foreign participation at a recent business conclave in Agartala as a sign of growing international interest in the state.
Why it matters
The state government wants to position Mayer Gomon as a distinctive cultural event that reflects the traditions and grandeur of Tripura's Durga Puja, and to use the interest it draws to promote tourism. Puja committees and clubs taking part in the carnival are being coordinated by the ICA Department ahead of the October 23 event.
