Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar has followed his record-breaking unbeaten 400 with another century, and in doing so set a new world mark for runs in a player's first four first-class innings.
Sutar scored 125 off 215 balls, with 12 fours, against Meghalaya in a Ranji Trophy Plate Group match at the Gokulbhai Somabhai Patel Stadium in Nadiad, Gujarat. The knock took him to 659 runs from four first-class innings, past the 616 made by Australia's Bill Ponsford more than 100 years ago.
The 400 against Nagaland
Days earlier, the left-hander made an unbeaten 400 off 517 balls against Nagaland at Sovima, with 46 fours and seven sixes. He became only the second batter to score a quadruple hundred in the Ranji Trophy. Only Maharashtra's Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, with 443 not out against Kathiawar in 1948-49, has made more in a single innings of the tournament.
That innings also put him among just 10 batters in first-class history to reach 400 in an innings, a list that includes Brian Lara, Don Bradman and Ponsford. It included an unbroken 190-run last-wicket stand with Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak.
A near miss on debut
Sutar's first-class career began earlier this month against Manipur, when he made 35 and 99, run out one short of a century. He has now gone 400 not out and 125 in his next two innings.
From Mumbai to Mizoram
The 29-year-old made his name in Mumbai's competitive local cricket circuit and played for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic one-day competition, but could not break into the state's red-ball side. He moved to Mizoram before the 2026-27 season in search of regular first-class cricket.
The North Eastern teams compete in the Plate Group of the Ranji Trophy. Sutar's run has brought rare national attention to Mizoram cricket, and his next innings will be watched closely.
