Nagaland Chief Minister and Naga People's Front (NPF) president Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday, October 21, called for an honourable, inclusive and mutually acceptable solution to the Indo-Naga political issue.
Speaking at the NPF's 64th Foundation Day at the Capital Cultural Hall in Kohima, Rio urged all negotiating parties to show sincerity, understanding and flexibility to bring the decades-long process to a conclusion, Northeast Live reported.
Peace and growth
Rio said lasting peace was essential for Nagaland's progress, and that growth, investment, development and jobs could not reach their potential without a peaceful settlement.
The NPF is not directly part of the talks between the Centre and Naga political groups, but Rio said it had an important role as a facilitator. The state government would keep engaging with the Centre and others to bridge differences, break deadlocks and create a conducive environment for dialogue.
He appealed to tribal bodies, civil society, churches, student groups, women, youth and political parties to work towards a common goal, saying differences of approach should not overshadow the shared aspirations of the Naga people.
On Manipur
Rio voiced concern over the situation in neighbouring Manipur, referring to the loss of innocent lives, burning of villages and displacement of families. He expressed solidarity with those affected and called for reconciliation, restoration of trust and lasting peace.
Development alongside peace
Rio said development could not wait for a settlement, and pointed to schemes including the Chief Minister's Micro Finance Scheme, the Nagaland Startup Policy, the Nagaland Skill and Entrepreneurship Development Mission, the Chief Minister's Health Insurance and Life Insurance schemes and the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission.
He also cited the state's first medical college, the Nagaland Staff Selection Board and the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland as steps to strengthen institutions, make recruitment more transparent and draw investment. He acknowledged significant challenges remained.
Party matters
Rio welcomed MLAs and leaders who had recently merged with or joined the NPF, saying the party was open to all committed to the welfare of the Naga people.
He recalled that the NPF and the BJP first came together after the 2003 Assembly elections under the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN), and said cooperation among parties remained important for peace and stability.
