Mizoram plans to recruit 100 regular primary teachers this year, Education Minister Vanlalthlana said at the general conference of the Mizoram Primary Teachers' Association (MPTA) in Aizawl on Friday, October 23, according to PTI.

He said the government had sanctioned the appointment of 671 teachers and was working to fill 100 regular primary posts in the current year. He did not give a subject-wise or district-wise break-up or a recruitment timetable.

Learning outcomes a concern

The minister said Mizoram ranked 31st nationally in the Performance Grading Index (PGI), which assesses school education across states and Union Territories, and named learning outcomes as a key area to fix.

He said the government had introduced the Standardised Assessment for Elementary Schools (SAfES), which tests whether students understand subjects rather than how much they have memorised, to help identify where children need more support.

MTET changes under consideration

The state is also looking at changes to the Mizoram Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) to give in-service teachers more chances to qualify. According to the minister:

  • The Mizoram Board of School Education is working on arrangements to let in-service teachers with more than five years of service left take the MTET before 2028.
  • The government is considering relaxing assessment requirements for serving teachers.
  • Holding the test twice a year is also under consideration.

These proposals have not been finalised, and details of any change to the exam schedule or eligibility rules are awaited.

Teachers' demands

At the conference, the MPTA adopted two resolutions asking the government to introduce Hindi in primary schools and to provide computer sets to all primary schools in the state.

For job seekers

The announcement is not a recruitment notification. Aspirants should wait for an official advertisement from the Mizoram School Education Department, which will set out eligibility, including MTET requirements, the number of posts and the application process. NEInsider will list the notification in its jobs section once it is published.
