The Meghalaya government has notified the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy, 2026, offering purchase incentives, tax exemptions and scrappage benefits to encourage clean transport, Highland Post reported from Shillong on Monday, October 19.

The policy will be in force for three years and replaces the 2021 policy. It aims to build a complete EV ecosystem to reduce fossil fuel use, improve air quality and attract investment.

As of June 2026, Meghalaya had 6.53 lakh registered vehicles, including over 2,500 EVs.

Purchase incentives

Incentives will be given on a first-come, first-served basis:

  • Electric two-wheelers (private and commercial) with an ex-factory price of up to ₹1.75 lakh: capped at 2,000 vehicles in each category.
  • Commercial electric three-wheelers, including e-autos and goods carriers: capped at 500 units.
  • Electric four-wheelers priced up to ₹35 lakh: ₹25,000 for private buyers and ₹50,000 for commercial operators, capped at 3,000 vehicles in each category.

Tax and fee waiver

All eligible EVs registered during the policy period will be exempt from motor vehicle tax and registration fees.

Scrappage incentives

To encourage people to replace old vehicles, the policy offers these amounts for scrapping BS-IV and older vehicles at authorised scrapping facilities:

| Vehicle replaced with | Scrappage incentive |

|---|---|

| E-two-wheeler | ₹10,000 |

| E-three-wheeler | ₹25,000 |

| Private e-four-wheeler | ₹50,000 |

| Commercial e-four-wheeler | ₹2 lakh |

Charging network

The Transport Department will work with the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation (MePDCL) and the Tourism, Urban Affairs and Public Works departments to expand charging and battery-swapping infrastructure across the state.

Government land may be leased for public charging stations, and applications will be handled through the Invest Meghalaya portal.

Who runs it

The Commissioner of Transport is the nodal agency. A state-level committee headed by the senior-most Secretary, Transport, will monitor implementation.

What buyers should know

Because incentives are capped and given on a first-come, first-served basis, buyers planning to switch to an electric vehicle should check eligibility and the application process with the Transport Department or their dealer before purchase.
