Police in Assam's Lakhimpur district are investigating after a cluster of gas-filled balloons carrying a banner of Bangladesh's ruling party's youth wing came down in a paddy field on Friday morning.

The balloons were found at Letekujan village under Narayanpur police station. According to local reports, a young boy grazing cattle saw them descend near an embankment, collected them and took them home. Villagers then informed the police.

What the banner showed

The flex banner carried the name and emblem of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Its message marked the 48th foundation anniversary of the organisation's Moulvibazar district unit. It also carried photographs of BNP leader and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, former prime minister Khaleda Zia and party founder Ziaur Rahman.

The Jubo Dal is one of the BNP's largest affiliated bodies, and its district units mark foundation days with rallies and public events. The BNP returned to power after Bangladesh's general election earlier this year, with Tarique Rahman as Prime Minister.

Moulvibazar is in north-eastern Bangladesh's Sylhet division. Videos shared on social media from Bangladesh have shown similar balloons with party banners being released at several places as part of the anniversary celebrations, which suggests the balloons may have drifted across the border on the wind. Helium balloons released at a celebration can rise high and be carried long distances before losing lift, though police have not yet confirmed the route these took.

Police probe

A team from Dhalpur police outpost visited Letekujan and took the balloons and the banner into custody. Police have started an inquiry to establish where the balloons were released and how they reached the village. No arrests have been reported.

Lakhimpur lies on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in upper Assam and does not share a border with Bangladesh, which is why the find surprised residents. The incident comes as Assam remains on alert over cross-border movement, with Dhubri police detaining 36 suspected Bangladeshi nationals on the same day. NEInsider will update this story if police share the findings of their inquiry.
