IIT Guwahati has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tata Electronics to build a Centre of Excellence on its campus dedicated to semiconductor assembly, testing, marking and packaging, the back-end stage of chip making known in the industry as ATMP.
The agreement was signed at the institute by Prof. Rohit Sinha, IIT Guwahati's Dean of Research and Development, and Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, chief human resources officer of Tata Electronics, the institute said on Friday, October 30.
What the centre will do
The centre will act as the hub for teaching, skill training and research in semiconductor packaging. Under the arrangement:
- IIT Guwahati will lead the design and delivery of new diploma-level training and BTech-level engineering programmes in ATMP
- Course content and specialised training modules will be developed jointly with Tata Electronics
- Classroom teaching will be combined with hands-on practical training
- Undergraduate and postgraduate students will be able to join collaborative research projects in chip packaging, assembly and testing
- Students will also get opportunities to train at Tata Electronics facilities
Beyond the IIT campus
A key feature of the tie-up is that it is not limited to IIT Guwahati's own students. The two partners will identify engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics in Assam and the wider Northeast to take part.
For these partner institutions, the plan includes preparing specialised course material, training their faculty members to teach semiconductor subjects, and giving their students access to practical sessions.
IIT Guwahati Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal said the initiative would link academic institutions, industry and students through focused education, practical training and research. He said mapping institutions across Assam and building semiconductor-specific curricula would widen access to technical education and strengthen the region's pool of trained talent.
Why it matters for Assam
ATMP is the stage where finished silicon wafers are cut, assembled into packages, tested and marked before they go into phones, cars and other electronics. It is labour- and skill-intensive, and India's semiconductor push has created demand for technicians and engineers trained specifically in this work.
Assam has been positioning itself as a semiconductor destination, and Tata Electronics is among the industry players with a stake in the state's plans. A local training pipeline at IIT Guwahati could help students from the Northeast compete for these jobs without moving out of the region for specialised courses.
The institute has not yet announced when the first programmes will begin, how many seats will be offered or which partner colleges will be selected. NEInsider will update this story when those details are made public.
