A new circular trekking route in Dzongu, the 'Heart of Sikkim - Kursong Kurmit Trail', was formally opened on Sunday, November 1, as Mangan district's part of the Sikkim Adventure Tourism Fest 2026, according to the state Information and Public Relations department.
Forest and Environment Minister Pintso Namgyal Lepcha flagged off the first group of trekkers from Lum Government Primary School in Lower Dzongu, Mangan district.
A long-pending trail
The minister spoke about the long process behind the trail, from planning and preparation to the reconnaissance work done before it was set up, and said he was glad the long-pending project had finally been completed. He thanked Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for his support and the local community for its cooperation.
He said the trail has been officially notified and approved, making it a formal addition to Sikkim's adventure tourism routes. Because it is a loop, trekkers start and finish at the same point, passing through Dzongu's forests, villages and river valleys on the way.
Hope for homestays and guides
Tshering Dorjee Lachungpa of Khangri Tours and Travels gave a technical overview of the route. He said the trail could boost eco-tourism and community-based tourism in Dzongu, and over time create work for local guides, homestays, transport operators and small businesses.
Speakers at the event urged trekkers to explore responsibly and stressed that tourism in the area should grow without harming its natural heritage. Dzongu, home to the Lepcha community and set on the Teesta river below Mount Khangchendzonga, is a protected reserve where visitors need permits.
Part of week-long fest
The Sikkim Adventure Tourism Fest, organised by the state Tourism department, runs from November 1 to 7, with the main venue at Linkhim Tar in Namthang. Flag-off programmes are being held in different districts during the week to showcase each area's adventure tourism options, the minister said.
