Mizoram Power Minister F Rodingliana was appointed chairman of the Northeastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) on Monday, becoming the first minister from the state to hold the post, officials said. The appointment order was issued by the Ministry of Power and the decision was reported from Aizawl.
Appointment as NERPC chairman
NERPC functions under the Ministry of Power and was constituted under the Electricity Act, 2003, with all seven northeastern states as members. The minister’s elevation to chairman gives Mizoram a direct voice in the regional power-planning body, according to Northeast Now.
Participation in the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit
At the time of his appointment, Rodingliana was in New Delhi attending the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 held at Bharat Mandapam. The summit was jointly organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During a round-table plenary session that brought together chief ministers and energy ministers and was chaired by the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Rodingliana highlighted Mizoram’s renewable-energy potential. He urged the MNRE to extend support under the newly launched Small Hydro Power Development Scheme and outlined the state’s push for rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, noting that Mizoram offers an additional subsidy alongside central assistance.
Meeting with New Development Bank officials
On Tuesday, the minister met representatives of the New Development Bank (NDB), also known as the BRICS Bank, at Mizoram House in New Delhi. The discussion focused on financial support for the proposed Tuivai Hydropower Project. NDB officials indicated that the project could be considered for funding but said the proposal would need to be routed through the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA). Officials said further discussions are expected after consultations with the department.
Accompanying officials and next steps
Rodingliana was accompanied by Power and Electricity Secretary Dr H Lianzela, Chief Engineer Laltlanthanga, Tuirini Project Management Unit Project Director C Lalsawmliana and other officials during the meetings. The appointment and subsequent engagements are expected to strengthen Mizoram’s role in regional power coordination and to advance the state’s renewable-energy initiatives, officials added.
