The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 50 kg of methamphetamine in two back-to-back operations in Mizoram and Assam, and arrested four people, the Finance Ministry said on Friday. Investigators believe the drugs were smuggled in from Myanmar.
The haul is made up of 30 kg of methamphetamine tablets, commonly sold as Yaba, and 20 kg of crystal methamphetamine. Both operations were carried out with help from the Assam Rifles, acting on intelligence that several consignments were being moved from Zokhawthar on the Myanmar border towards Aizawl and Silchar.
Tablets inside an office table
On Thursday, October 29, officers stopped a Mahindra Bolero Camper on the outskirts of Aizawl, on the Aizawl-Champhai road. Inside a specially built cavity in an office table with a storage cabinet, they found 30 brick-shaped packets of pinkish-orange tablets weighing 30 kg.
The DRI described the use of furniture as cover cargo as a new method, apparently meant to make the vehicle look as if it were carrying ordinary household or office goods.
Crystal meth packed as tea
On Friday, October 30, a second team intercepted an Ashok Leyland truck and another Bolero Camper at Dholai in Cachar district, about 40 km from Silchar. Twenty packets of crystal methamphetamine, weighing 20 kg in all, were hidden above the truck's driver cabin, packed in tea packets with foreign markings. A field test showed the presence of amphetamine.
The four people arrested have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. All three vehicles have been seized.
A string of large seizures
The DRI said the latest seizures follow two other big recoveries of 232 kg and 56 kg of methamphetamine in the North-East in recent weeks. The agency said the run of cases shows how large and persistent cross-border synthetic-drug trafficking has become, and that it is working to identify and break up the networks moving these drugs into India.
Mizoram's long, porous border with Myanmar, and the road from Champhai and Zokhawthar towards Aizawl and the Barak Valley, have been a major route for methamphetamine, heroin and other drugs entering the region.
