Police in Duliajan have arrested a man who allegedly tried to get back into Oil India Limited (OIL) under a new identity after the company dismissed him for using forged documents, Pratidin Time reported on Saturday.
The arrest followed a complaint from OIL's management. Duliajan police registered Case No. 189/2026, and the accused has been sent to Dibrugarh jail, the channel said.
How the alleged fraud worked
The accused, a resident of Abhoipuria village at Barua Pukhuri under Haluwating police station in Sivasagar district, had first joined the public sector oil major on fabricated papers in one name, according to the report. He is said to have worked there for about a year and drawn a monthly salary of roughly Rs 55,000 to Rs 60,000 before the forgery came to light and he was dismissed.
He then allegedly changed his name and obtained fresh certificates for the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination and an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) course under the new identity. With those documents, he cleared both the written test and the interview in a new round of OIL recruitment.
The scheme unravelled when company officials scrutinised his documents during verification and established who he was, Pratidin Time said. After his arrest, the accused admitted before the media that he had worked at the company on fabricated papers. Such statements are not evidence in court, and the case will be tested at trial.
Questions for the investigation
Police suspect that some OIL officers or employees may have helped him, and that line of inquiry is continuing, the report said. Investigators will also need to establish how a second set of school and ITI certificates was issued under a different name.
Oil India, headquartered at Duliajan in Dibrugarh district, is one of Assam's largest employers. Its recruitment drives for technical and workman posts draw large numbers of applicants from Upper Assam.
It is not the only recent forged-document case in Assam recruitment: Pratidin Time has also reported the arrest of eight people for submitting forged documents during a police recruitment drive in the state.
OIL has not issued a public statement on the arrest. NEInsider will update this story if the company or police share more details.
