Four police personnel were injured when a truck driver and his handyman allegedly attacked them inside Samaguri police station in Assam's Nagaon district late on Sunday, November 1, police said.
Police said the two men were allegedly drunk at the time. A suo motu case has been registered against them.
From a highway crash to the police station
According to police, the truck hit another vehicle at Sonaribali on National Highway 127, the road linking Kaliabor and Nagaon, at around 11 pm on Sunday. The driver allegedly did not stop and drove away from the spot.
After getting information about the crash, a team from Samaguri police station intercepted the truck, and took the driver and the handyman to the station for questioning, a senior officer said, India Today NE and Rediff reported.
Assault during questioning
During questioning, the two men allegedly turned on the officers and assaulted them, the senior officer said.
The injured were identified as Sub-Inspector Bikash Bora and constables Nishan Jyoti Bora, Bhaiti Inti and Pranab Bangthai. All four were taken to a nearby hospital, where their condition was described as stable.
"A suo motu case has been registered against them at Samaguri police station, and an investigation is underway," the officer said.
Police have not named the driver or the handyman. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was hurt in the original collision at Sonaribali, or what charges the two men will face over the crash and the assault.
Drink-driving on the highways
Samaguri lies in Nagaon district on the stretch of highway between Nagaon town and Kaliabor, a busy route for trucks moving through central Assam, much of it at night. Assam Police have repeatedly run drives against drink-driving and rash driving on the state's highways, and attacks on officers on duty are treated as serious offences.
