Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) will be able to admit 153 postgraduate (MD/MS) students in the 2026-27 academic year, up from 95, after the National Medical Commission (NMC) approved 58 additional seats.
Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the health portfolio, announced the increase on social media, saying the new seats were spread across specialised disciplines and would open up more opportunities for young doctors in the state. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister JP Nadda for their support.
According to Tripurainfo, the increase was notified through an NMC letter and public notice dated November 6, and AGMC released the discipline-wise seat details the same day. The rise is more than 61 per cent.
Where the new seats are
Some of the biggest gains, as listed in the college's seat details:
- MD Paediatrics: 5 to 10
- MD Anaesthesiology: 4 to 9
- MS Ophthalmology: 3 to 8
- MD Anatomy and MD Physiology: 3 to 8 each
- MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology: 8 to 12
- MD Community Medicine: 6 to 10
- MD Pathology: 4 to 8
- MD Biochemistry and MD Forensic Medicine: up to 7 each
- MD Microbiology: 3 to 6
Smaller increases were approved in Pharmacology, ENT and TB and Respiratory Diseases. Two new courses have been added: MD Dermatology with four seats and MD Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with three.
Intake stays unchanged in General Medicine (11), General Surgery (9), Radio-Diagnosis (7), Orthopaedics (5), Psychiatry (3) and Radiotherapy (3).
Bigger MBBS intake too
The PG expansion comes weeks after the NMC raised AGMC's MBBS intake from 150 to 250 seats for 2026-27. In May, the Centre sanctioned Rs 273.46 crore for expanding the college, which runs alongside the state's main referral hospital, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala.
Why it matters
Tripura has long relied on doctors trained outside the state, and patients often travel to Guwahati, Kolkata or further for specialist care. More postgraduate seats at home mean more resident doctors working in AGMC's wards while they train, and a larger pool of specialists who may stay on to serve in district hospitals.
Admissions to the added seats will follow the NEET-PG counselling process for 2026-27.
